How many times have you heard the saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”? Plenty, right?
We’ve all heard that saying sometime during our childhood and even as adults. The question is: is it true or just a little ole folks tale? It’s a folks tale.
Our words do hurt and our words shape how we think of ourselves and others. They say that children can say the meanest things but where do you think they get it from…the adults. It’s a generational curse and it’s time that we take a stand and say “the buck stops here”!
Here are 3 easy steps on how to change your mindset for success:
- Think about what you’re thinking about – it sounds crazy but its true. The moment a negative or unpleasant thought pops up in your head, stop and think about what triggered that thought. Was it something you just heard, or seen, or did that reminded you of something unpleasant and cause that thought to pop up in your head? Write it down. When you get a moment, either during your quiet time or meditation, reflect on it to find out how you can release those feelings that generated that thought so you can be free from thinking that way.
- Replace the negative with the positive – this goes hand-in-hand with #1. Whatever feeling or emotion that cause you to have an unpleasant or negative thought, ask yourself “How can I turn this around to form a positive mindset of myself and/or others?”. Write it down. Putting things on paper is CRUCIAL to remembering things because seeing it in writing keeps us accountable. Remember, our words shape our thoughts and feelings and if we’re looking to be successful in life, then we have to start speaking those things that may not currently be as though they were. As you speak it you’ll then believe it to be so.
- Train your brain by speaking positive over yourself – Changing your mindset can only be accomplish when you begin speaking positive influences over your life. Only then will the words of your mouth, the meditations of your heart and the thoughts of your mind align. A mindset for success is trained. Sure it may come easy for some then it does for others but its still trained. Speak aloud those positive words over yourself and allow your own voice to train your ear in believing that what you say out of your mouth holds true for you.
